As Variety reports, Redbox's parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, changed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case to Chapter 7 yesterday. As a result, Rebdox will shut down all its DVD rental kiosks and streaming services. Redbox was launched in 2002.

The number of DVD kiosks operated by the company declined from 36,000 at the time of the acquisition to 27,000 at the end of March. The pandemic-induced movie shortage, combined with a declining number of kiosks, led to continued revenue decline. Already loaded with debt, Chicken Soup quickly ran out of money.

NBCUniversal sued Redbox over unpaid DVD and online rental royalties in February. The studio alleged in its complaint that Redbox had stopped paying royalties “around the summer of 2022” and that it was owed around $16.7 million altogether.

CSSE not only owns the Redbox brand but also the streaming services Crackle and Chicken Soup for the Soul. CSSE acquired Redbox in August of 2022 as part of a $375 million acquisition deal.

As part of ongoing liquidation proceedings, Redbox's online streaming services and mobile app ceased functioning in July 2024, and all 26,000 remaining Redbox kiosks will eventually be shut down.
