Gravy is one those universal sauces that can either be wonderful or downright awful.

I will be the first to admit that I am definitely NOT a gravy fan, in general. Mostly because I like mine thick, creamy and flavorful. Too often they are just thrown together, thin and not really holding together well.

I am going to change that for you (and me)!

This made from scratch keto gravy is going to rock your world. Eat is on biscuits, meat, eggs and even to dip your keto bread into it.

What makes this gravy extra special is the medium-coarse ground pepper. Pepper is one of those wonder ingredients and when used right it can really dress up a recipe.

Is Gravy OK on Keto?

You bet it is! Be careful, though. Many gravies are not keto inherently so you need to make sure your keto gravy recipe is keto friendly.

Never fear, though, as THIS tasty peppered keto gravy is most certainly keto friendly.

How to Store Keto Gravy

I like to add my leftover gravy to a mason jar and store it in the refrigerator.

You definitely want to keep it cold and in an airtight container.

It should keep its freshness for up to 3-4 days. We did keep it longer, but I like to be on the safe side with recommendations.

Can I add Sausage to this Keto Gravy?

You absolutely can! I do many times.

I will brown some ground sausage while making the gravy. Once the gravy and sausage are both cooked, you add the ground sausage to the gravy pan and let the gravy and sausage flavors blend for a few minutes over low heat.

I like to add sausage and then have biscuits and gravy using these keto biscuits.

What Can I Use as a Thicken on Keto?

In most cases, including this one, xanthan gum is the ideal thickener on keto.

Cornstarch and wheat flour are common non keto thickeners in most recipes but we want to stay away from both of these, in general.

Just a tiny bit of xanthan gum goes a long way, so be careful you don't put too much in. Things tend to get a bit slimy if overused.

I generally use between 1/8 teaspoon to 1 teaspoon in most recipes. I don't think I've ever used more than 1 teaspoon. This recipe is the max!

What Can I Substitute For Beef Bone Broth?

Beef bone broth is one of those versatile ingredients that actually can get substituted for if needed.

You can basically substitute just chicken, beef or vegetable broth/stock interchangeably in most cases. You will have a slightly different taste, salt content, spice content, etc..

BUT in a jam, they will generally all work.

You can even substitute water if absolutely needed. I prefer to use a broth or stock as the flavor really helps make the gravy flavorful.

How To Make Keto Gravy

Add bone broth, butter, pepper, garlic powder, Italian Seasoning to a medium saucepan. Heat over medium heat to melt butter.

When the butter is melted, add heavy whipping cream and xanthan gum and briskly whisk until it reaches a soft boil and begins to thick. About 3-5 minutes. It is ok if chunks form initially, the whisking will take care of that.

Turn heat down to simmer and continue to simmer for 10 minutes, stirring often.

  • 2 cups beef bone broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons medium ground pepper not coarse, not fine
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
