The Schlitterbahn Vacation Village Waterpark in Kansas City, Kan. was conceived in the mid 2000s. In 2014, Verrückt opened, but the ride wouldn't make it past the summer of 2016 before problems and the August 2016 death of Caleb Schwab caused it to shut down.

Fatal incident

On August 7, 2016, Caleb Schwab, the 10-year-old son of Kansas state representative Scott Schwab, died while riding Verrückt. The raft he was riding went airborne during the ascent of the second hump and struck a metal support of the netting, decapitating him.

The entire family thought they had witnessed a miracle and that Kelvin had in fact come back to life. But a few seconds later, the little boy's body fell back in the casket and the family couldn't revive him again. The boy was rushed back to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a second time.

In December, Henry agreed to plead guilty to one charge of drug possession if prosecutors dropped the other charges. Henry's attorneys said since the 2018 incident in Merriam, their client spent time in a sober living facility, continues mental health treatment and has passed 58 separate drug screenings.

On May 1, 2018, IBC Bank took over ownership of the park at foreclosure auction. Schlitterbahn continued to operate it while a new owner was sought. The property was rebranded as Waves Resort Corpus Christi.
